1945–2005
A graphic novel documenting a family’s history in two parts: one from 1945, the other from 2005. Each square page merges imagery and text, thus communicating the narrative in a very visual way rather than merely relying on the legibility of the words. Whole paragraphs are often obstructed by images, making the book a collection of emotions that evolve from page to page, rather than a retelling of specific events. The account follows two characters, who although separated by a generation, are thematically intertwined. The book literally weaves the pages together in an accordion, reiterating the characters’ emotional similarities and reliance on one another through two entirely disparate moments in time. The imagery consists of original illustrations and photography; the story, although not fully legible within the project, was written in its entirety by Kat Riehle.
